Coach Jerry Gillespie

Tennis Biography: Began playing tennis in Antigo with his father at age 11.  In addition to playing football and basketball throughout high school, Jerry played #1 singles for each of his 3 years but failed to qualify for the WIAA state tennis tournament.  Won 7 varsity letters in high school.  Played #2 singles at St. Norbert College as a freshman but discontinued collegiate tennis as a sophomore because of afternoon biology labs.  Became the 85th member to sign up at Four Seasons indoor tennis club and has played competitive tennis year round ever since.  Was the first Legion/VFW park tennis instructor for the city of De Pere.  Was hired as the summer tennis pro at Greene Isle Park in the mid 1970’s and at Oneida Golf and Riding Club in the 1980’s.  Coached DIII UWGB men’s tennis team from 1977-1981. Coached football, track and basketball at De Pere. Was chosen as the inaugural girl’s and boy’s tennis coach for De Pere high school in 1980 and coached both teams for 4 years.  Had 11 individuals (6 girls & 5 boys) qualify for the WIAA state tournament including his oldest daughter Shannon and current boy’s coach John Zellner.  Managed Western Racquet & Fitness Club from 1985-87 and was voted into the Brown County Tennis Hall of Fame in 1987.  Was chosen by coach Zellner as an assistant for the De Pere boys’ tennis team in spring of 2008.  Helped 2 doubles teams and 1 singles player qualify for the individual state tennis tournament as well as the 10 player varsity squad to WIAA team state for the first time ever in 2009.  Currently leading a significant fundraiser for the renovation and expansion of the high school tennis courts.

Coaching Philosophy:  To do all I can to maximize every player’s ability and allow them the opportunity to be successful and enjoy the lifetime sport of tennis.

Team Goal:  To have all team members set high goals, practice and play hard and with passion in order to improve each time they step on the tennis court.

Jerry is a financial advisor with Mass Mutual Life Insurance Company and owns his own firm called Gillespie and Associates, LLC.  It is located in the former US Post Office at 416 George Street, De Pere.
